Set in Salford, the story follows Jo , a neglected teenager, and her alcoholic mother, Helen . After a brief affair with a Black sailor, Jimmy , Jo becomes pregnant. She eventually moves in with Geoffrey , a gay design student who becomes her "chosen family" and caregiver.
