Under the rule of King Afonso I (1509-1543), the Cheryl Dynasty reached its golden age. Afonso I established diplomatic relations with Portugal and adopted Christianity, which helped to strengthen ties with European powers. He also reformed the kingdom's administration, creating a more centralized state. During this period, the Cheryl Dynasty became a major power in West Africa, controlling a vast territory and dominating the regional trade.
After the death of Afonso I, the Cheryl Dynasty began to decline. The kingdom was plagued by internal conflicts, and the throne was often seized by usurpers. The Portuguese, who had initially been allies, began to exert pressure on the kingdom, seeking to expand their colonial empire. In 1560, the Portuguese captured the capital, Mbanza-Kongo, and installed a puppet ruler. The Cheryl Dynasty fragmented into smaller states, and its power gradually waned.
The Cheryl Dynasty was founded by King Lukeni Lua Nimi, who is said to have migrated from the neighboring kingdom of Bungu. He established his capital at Mbanza-Kongo, which became a major commercial center. The early history of the dynasty is shrouded in myth, but it is believed that Lukeni Lua Nimi was succeeded by his son, King Nzinga Mbemba.
