On Your Mind 1971 - Karen Dalton Something

In 2021/2022, a Super Deluxe Edition of In My Own Time was released, featuring previously unreleased live versions and alternate takes of "Something On Your Mind".

Bob Dylan famously cited her as his "favorite singer" in his memoir Chronicles: Volume One .

The central line, "Well, you know, you can't make it without ever even trying," has been interpreted by modern artists as a potent anthem for survival and facing things that set one back.

The album was recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY, during a rare period when Dalton, who was notoriously uncomfortable in studio settings, allowed for a fully realized production with up to 12 backing musicians. Musical Analysis

It features a rich blend of electric guitar , pedal steel , and a distinctive, weeping fiddle that enters as Dalton begins to sing.

It was written by Dino Valenti (also known as Chet Powers), but Dalton's rendition is often cited as the definitive "folk classic".

The song was released in 1971 on Paramount Records as the opening track of In My Own Time , produced by Harvey Brooks.
