It was a sweltering summer afternoon in August 1944. The kind of day where the sun beat down on you like a relentless drumbeat, making the air shimmer with heat. In a small, rural town that seemed to have been forgotten by time, a legendary fruit stand was about to become the center of a most unusual commotion.

The children breathed a collective sigh of relief. Mr. Jenkins offered them a deal: help him guard the arrangement through the night in exchange for a slice of each of the melons used.
