During a near-death moment, Zoro recalls a lesson from his childhood mentor, Koshiro, about a swordsman who can "cut nothing" to protect what they want, yet "cut anything," including steel.

This episode marks Zoro's first step toward advanced swordsmanship. Fans often retrospectively view his "sensing the breath of things" as an early introduction to Haki (specifically Observation and Armament), long before the concept was officially named in the series.

Zoro faces Daz Bonez (Mr. 1), an assassin whose Dice-Dice Fruit allows him to turn any part of his body into steel blades. Because Zoro cannot yet cut through steel, he is severely injured and pushed to his absolute physical limit.
