by Kate London is a standout debut that bridge the gap between fictional suspense and the gritty, unvarnished reality of British policing. London, a former detective in the Metropolitan Police’s homicide command, leverages her real-world experience to craft a narrative that feels startlingly authentic. The Incident on the Roof
Set against the backdrop of London’s class divides and racial tensions, the novel is more than a simple whodunit. It is an intelligent exploration of how ethics and loyalty are tested in the most extreme circumstances. From Page to Screen POST MORTEM by Kate London | Tipping My Fedora
Unlike many procedural thrillers, Post Mortem avoids "bitty" clichés. London’s background in the homicide squad allows her to delve into the "dark heart" of policing, exploring the moral compromises and systemic pressures faced by officers on the beat.
The story opens with a haunting scene: a veteran beat cop and a teenage girl fall to their deaths from a tower block in London’s East End. Only two witnesses remain on that roof—a traumatized five-year-old boy and a rookie police officer, Lizzie Griffiths. When Lizzie disappears just hours later, the case transforms from a tragic accident into a high-stakes investigation led by DS Sarah Collins of the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS).
The dynamic between the methodical Sarah Collins and the troubled, fugitive Lizzie Griffiths creates a compelling tension. London explores their motivations with a "slow drip-feed" of information that keeps readers second-guessing until the end.
