Born in the village of Lexerî in Erzurum, he later moved to Diyarbakır, where he spent most of his life.

He was a master of the "kilam" (Kurdish folk songs/ballads). His repertoire included dozens of traditional songs that chronicled Kurdish history, love, and tragedy.
