Optimistic theater owner Buster Moon is facing financial ruin. To revitalize his business, he organizes a singing contest with a supposed prize of $1,000. However, a clerical error by his assistant, Miss Crawly, accidentally lists the prize as on the promotional fliers. This massive (but non-existent) prize money attracts a diverse group of animals, each facing their own personal struggles:
