In 1977, Susie Bannion arrives at the Tanz Dance Academy in during a torrential storm. Upon her arrival, she witnesses another student, Patricia Hingle , fleeing the school in a state of sheer terror. Patricia seeks refuge with her psychotherapist, Dr. Josef Klemperer , claiming the school is run by "Three Mothers"—ancient, powerful witches who predate Christianity.
