The story of VAT 69 began in 1882 with William Sanderson, a Scotch whisky blender from Leith, Scotland. In a quest to create the perfect blend, Sanderson prepared 100 different casks—or "vats"—of blended whisky and invited a panel of expert tasters to judge them blind. Cask number 69 was unanimously selected as the superior blend, giving the brand its distinctive name.

VAT 69 has achieved a level of fame that transcends its status as a beverage, largely due to its presence in popular culture. It is perhaps most recognizable to modern audiences from the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers , where it was the preferred drink of Captain Lewis Nixon. Beyond the screen, it has a rugged historical pedigree: it was one of the spirits Sir Ernest Shackleton chose to bring on his legendary Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914 for "medicinal purposes".
