Edward soon becomes infatuated with Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale), a refined patient institutionalized for "hysteria" after attacking her abusive husband. The film concludes with a double revelation. While it is revealed that Dr. Lamb was an army surgeon who suffered a mental break after executing his own wounded soldiers, the final "gotcha" centers on Edward. The man claiming to be "Edward Newgate" is actually an escaped patient with pseudologia fantastica who fell in love with Eliza during a lecture.
